INTENT

At Thurcroft Infant School we deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more. As a result of this they will become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society who understand how they are developing personally and socially, and give them confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. This links with our school vision of “We will be kind, work hard and be the best we can be”. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Thurcroft Infant school we implement PSHE learning by building on and developing the children’s experiences and understanding. We use discussion and group work to allow all children to participate fully in the PSHE learning process. To stimulate children’s thoughts and feelings across all areas of PSHE we use visual stimuli when appropriate such as photographs and video clips. Our children are encouraged to talk about their thoughts and feelings, whilst also being respectful to others.
In the Foundation Stage, teachers use the Development Matters Statements and Early Learning Goals in the EYFS curriculum (2021) to plan and deliver PSED. In Key Stage 1, the teachers follow the National Curriculum objectives. This is implemented by planning which follows the RoSIS Scheme of Work, and is adapted to suit our pupils needs. The RoSIS Scheme of Work provides clear guidance for each year group to support the delivery of PSHE lessons.
To ensure that children get a broad and balanced curriculum we believe that PSHE must be taught weekly but also be integrated where appropriate into other areas of school life such as assemblies, manners and behaviours around school. All teachers follow a PSHE structure but have the freedom to address issues and questions that may arise in their individual class. Weaved throughout our PSHE learning is the statutory SRE (Sex and relationships education) which is taught at an age-appropriate level. We place high importance on the children’s understanding of relationships and how they interact with others to enable the children to have healthy relationships in their lives.
